Aortic and Mitral Valve Replacement via Sternotomy
10 months ago
74 year old lady with aortic and mitral valve stenosis and regurgitation due to rheumatic valve disease. She reported breathlessness on exertion over the past 12 months. Surgery performed via sternotomy. Two pericardial tissue prosthetic heart valves were inserted. She made an uneventful postoperative recovery and was discharged from hospital eight days after surgery. Rheumatic heart valve disease is a common cause of disability and premature death in developing nations. It is an increasingly uncommon cause of heart valve dysfunction in Australia, where degenerative disorders of the heart valves are seen more commonly.
