Case description

This video demonstrates an unique technique for performing a robotic radical prostatectomy for cancer. One will notice that his method differs from others in the erectile nerve bundles, the rectum and urethra are completely dissected at the beginning of the case rather than at the end. Dr. Engel's self-taught technique evolved to be this way in an effort to address early criticisms of robotic surgery leading to higher margin rates. Dr. Engel proved that, when performed well by a highly experienced surgeon, that robotic surgery actually produces lower positive margin rates, nearly always allows the surgeon to spare the erectile nerves, and can be done more quickly (average operative time for Dr. Engel is 90 minutes) than other methods.
