Biography
Jason D. Engel, MD, Director of Urologic Robotic Surgery at George Washington University Hospital, is widely considered a pioneer in the field of urologic robotic surgery. He was the first to successfully perform a robotic prostatectomy in the region, and Dr. Engel is the founder of the robotic prostatectomy program at GW.

He has now personally performed over 600 robotic prostatectomies, the most of any surgeon in the mid-Atlantic.

He has expanded his robotic expertise to include the largest series of ureteral and bladder surgeries in the region, and is now commonly performing kidney procedures with this technology as well. Dr. Engel also performs major oncologic procedures such as open and laparoscopic kidney surgery, open and robotic bladder surgery as well as complex urologic reconstruction. For enlarged prostate, Dr. Engel performs more in-office minimally invasive treatments than any other surgeon in Washington, D.C., and is also a member of the kidney transplant team at Howard University Hospital.

Through his current research endeavors, Dr. Engel has become a foremost authority on penile rehabilitation after prostatectomy. He is currently the principal investigator on two clinical trials aimed to maximize erection rates after prostatectomy. His research has been recently quoted in the New York Times, and his publications and presentations focus largely on prostatectomy outcomes such as the strong relationship between surgeon experience and cancer cure rates, methods to decrease positive margin rates, and erectile function and incontinence after prostatectomy. He has authored several book chapters within the topic of robotic surgery, and has recently published articles on complications of robotic prostatectomy, pseudoaneurysms of the urinary tract and ureteral surgery using robotic technology.

Dr. Engel received his undergraduate degree with distinction from the University of Virginia. His medical degree was also conferred with honors from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and his post-graduate training was done at Northwestern University in the areas of Surgery and Urology. Dr. Engel has also appeared on FOX News, ABC News, WUSA-TV9, The Washington Times, the Washington Business Journal and PBS. He was voted as a "Top Doctor" in Washingtonian Magazine for the last two editions, and was the youngest Urologist ever given that honor six years ago. Dr. Engel is the CEO and managing partner of Urologic Surgeons of Washington, and you can learn more about him or his practice at www.dcurology.net. He grew up in Wheaton, MD, and now resides in Chevy Chase with his wife and three boys.
