This video demonstrates a hand-assisted laparoscopic radical nephrectomy. Author of this video always employs this technique when a total nephrectomy is known to be necessary pre-operatively or in the case of high risk situations such as a solitary kidney or multiple tumors in one kidney. In such high risk cases, having hand-assist available allows to perform partial kidney resections in circumstances where otherwise only an open surgery would be considered safe. Hand-Assisted laparoscopy allows to typically perform a nephrectomy in 30 minutes and does not add any recovery time or extra pain to the case over standard laparoscopy.
