Case description

Entrapment of squamous epithelium (which could expand) causes effects to nearby structures - the name of this particular condition is cholesteatoma. There are two types of this disease - congenital and aquired (more common). Variable degrees of osteitis, erosions, and secondary infections strengthen symptoms and signs (for example smelly ear discharge or reduction of hearing). Following things may be the complications: facial palsy, vertigo due to labyrinthine fistula, and otogenic meningitis or abscess. Left ear cholesteatoma with an attic perforation is presented. The whitish layer in the cavity is due to cholesteatoma accumulation. The comparision with the the right ear unexpectedly revealed mild eardrum retraction involving the pars tensa.
