Case description

The mucosa of the ascending colon appers normal Complete colonoscopy into the cecum and terminal ileum is most helpful in distinguishing ulcerative colitis from Crohn’s disease. Ulcerative colitis is characterized by diffuse, superficial inflammation of the colonic mucosa that begins in the rectum and extends proximally to involve any contiguous length of colon. The small bowel is not involved, although the distal ileum may exhibit similar superficial inflammation, usually in the setting of extensive colitis, termed backwash ileitis.
