Case description

Esophageal GISTs present unique challenges. First, the tumor must be recognized correctly as a GIST. Due to the similar clinical, endoscopic, and radiographic appearance as the far more common esophageal leiomyoma, a GIST may not be identified as such untilafter resection. Because GISTs are fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)avid, FDG-positron emission tomography (PET) scanning may beused to differentiate them from leiomyoma.
