Case description

The film presents thoracoscopic management of pleural empyema in 2.5 year old girl. The main advantage of thoracoscopy in pleural empyema is posibility to: separation of the septum and chambers connection, evacuation of pus and fibrin conglomerates, removing layers of fibrin from the parietal and visceral pleura (decortication), rinsing the pleural cavity and location a drain under optical view. This allows to expand the collapsed lung, liquidate potential inflammatory factor, shortening the duration of treatment and hospital stay. In addition, thoracoscopy enables pleural biopsy which in some cases leads to recognition of the specific process and introduction of appropriate treatment (e.g.TB). Procedure was performed in the Department of Pediatric Surgery in Zabrze, Medical University of Silesia, Poland.
