Case description

Syringing with warm water (at body temperature) is presented as a technique of removing the earwax. This procedure needs softening solution instilled before or softer wax to be properly performed. Patient with suspicion of eardrum perforation (medical history suggests repeated mucopurulent ear discharge) is disqualified from this procedure. The stream of water jet is directed posterosuperiorly along the ear passage. The residual water should be mopp or suck out. The complication may appear as a perforation of the eardrum and vertigo (caloric effect on the vestibular system). Outpatient clinic is the place where this particular procedure is commonly performed by the ENT surgeon or by qualified healthcare professionals. Historically, this procedure was performed by using Higginson's syringe. Nowadays, doctors use more gently device - electrical-driven water-jet irrigator with controlled water temperature.
