Case description

Mahmoud Rahuma

- Presentation on principles of limb amputation with a focus on surgical technique and course of surgery.

- Peripheral vascular disease is the most common cause of limb amputation, followed by trauma and cancer.

- Three clear indications to consider amputation are an unreconstructable limb, soft tissue irreparable vascular injury, and severe loss of plantar foot skin and soft tissue.

- A simple scoring system helps in deciding amputation based on four parameters: mechanism of injury, patient hemodynamic state, ischemia, and age.

- Above-knee amputation results in higher energy consumption compared to below-knee amputation, and the ideal level of amputation is the junction between the proximal and distal third of the limb.
