Case description

80% of the American population will suffer from lower back pain. This is often the result of poor lifting techniques. Lifting injuries can cause considerable back pain that will continue to grow worse if the lifting continues. Individuals who lift heavy objects (especially those who do this on a regular basis resulting in ongoing lifting injuries) with the object too far away from their body will risk damaging their lower back. This is because when you lift an object that is farther away, unnecessary strain is put on the lower back. MRIs from the top down often show specific tears in the disc; these specific tears or lines are what cause this significant back pain. For individuals who suffer from lower back pain, it is difficult to tell where it is coming from without an MRI. Dr. Corenman recommends rest and anti-inflammatory medication for low back pain; however, some individuals will suffer from chronic back pain and will need additional help such as physical therapy and sometimes surgery.

It is important for individuals to understand how to prevent back injuries and to implement proper lifting techniques to avoid injury.
