Case description

Brief description of the anterior cruciate ligament or ACL, its purpose and mechanism of injury. The video contains computer images and animations, to help the viewer understand the anatomy and physiology of the structures in the knee joint. The ACL is critical for preventing anterior translation and rotation of the tibia during knee flexion. ACL tears usually occur with a non-contact injury. The ACL has no potential to heal itself when torn due to its location in the middle of the knee joint. Once the initial swelling resolves, the ACL injury itself is not particularly painful. However, the "slipping" and rotational instability is usually intolerable to athletes during cutting and pivoting activities. Additionally, every time the knee slips, there is potential for injury to the knee cartilage and or meniscus. Presented by dr. Clayton Lane
