Case description

Surgical video of a medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction performed by Dr. Clayton Lane. The video demonstrates a patella or kneecap dislocation and how it is surgically treated. MPFL stands for medial patellofemoral ligament. MPFL runs from the patella or kneecap to the femur. It is also located of the inside of the knee and is thus called medial patellofemoral ligament. The purpose of the MPFL is to prevent the kneecap from dislocating laterally, which is a common direction of dislocation. Due to the force applied to the patella, MPFL can potentially rupture and is unable to heal by itself. If it is not healed, and the kneecap continues to dislocate, especially repeatedly it should be reconstructed. The video shows how the kneecap dislocates and the surgical procedure itself. A hamstring graft is used to reconstruct the ligament.
