Case description

The video shows a craniotomy for resection of a symptomatic neurocysticercosis cyst (Taenia solium) that failed medical treatment. Humans are definitive hosts but they can become also accidental secondary hosts when they are infected by embryonated eggs, either by autoinfection or ingestion of contaminated food (causing cysticercosis). The diagnosis of neurocysticercosis is mainly clinical, based on a compatible presentation of symptoms and findings of imaging studies. Neurocysticercosis which affects the brain can give neurological symptoms. In developing countries this is one of the most common causes of seizures.

Surgery by James B. Walker, MD, neurosurgeon at Baptist Memorial Hospital of Oxford.
