Case description

Longstanding extensive UC is associated with a significantly increased risk of developing colon cancer. Colonoscopic surveillance is increasingly used in this group of patients. Patients with ulcerative colitis have a 2 to 8 fold increased risk of developing colorectal cancer compared to the general population. Colorectal cancer influences long term survival in patients with ulcerative colitis. Stage of colorectal cancer at time of diagnosis is an important predictor of survival.
