Case description

Mitral valve repair is a surgical procedure of treating mitral valve stenosis or regurgitation. The techniques of this procedure include annuloplasty (insertion of a cloth-covered ring around the valve to bring the leaflets into contact with each other), removal of loose parts of leaflets or re-suspension of the leaflets with artificial chords. Typically, the repair takes place during an open heart surgery, with a stopped heart, which neccessitates the use of a cardiopulmonary bypass to provide blood flow and oxygenation. Nevertheless, new techniques are still in development.

In the following video, dr Daniel M Bethencourt, performs a robotic assisted mitral valve repair on a beating heart.
