Dr Tamburrini graduated from medical school at the Tor Vergata University of Rome (Italy) in 2012 and was trained in general thoracivc surgery in Rome and in cardiac and thoracic surgery in Southampton, where he also completed a fellowship in minimally invasive thoracic surgery.
Dr Tamburrini has been a consultant thoracic surgeon at University Hospital Southampton since October 2020 (locum) and was appointed substantive consultant in April 2022.
He is trained in both open and minimally-invasive approaches (video-assisted thoracic surgery and robotic-assisted thoracic surgery) and he performs approximately 300 cases per year.
He is the Lead Surgeon for thoracic trauma and his main surgical interests include:
- Locally advanced thoracic malignancies (surgeries for cancers involving airways, major vessels, pericardium or rib cage) - Mediastinal masses (removal of tumours of the mediastinum) - Chest traumas (surgeries for rib fractures and sternal fractures) - Mesothelioma (extended pleurectomy/decortication) - Chest wall resections and reconstructions (for both benign and malignant conditions) - Lung volume reduction (surgery for emphysema) - Non-intubated thoracic surgery (procedures without intubation and general anesthesia)
Dr Tamburrini does research in several fields of thoracic surgery and he is author or co-author of more than 20 peer-reviewed articles and one book chapter.
