Case description

Youssef proposed that unique medical theory to test the hypothesis that stuttering results from a defect in the timing integration of sensory signals (auditory, motor, and tactile) in the brain, leading to neural conflicts in motor coordination during speech. The fundamental idea is that a person who stutters suffers not only from a disorder in the speech centers, but also from a defect in anticipating the timing of sounds or movements associated with speech. This theory lays the foundation for a new theory that stuttering is not just the result of a language or social deficit, but rather a dysfunction of the sensorimotor timing system, opening the door to treatments based on sensory perception and time.
