Case description

The omentum is a thin fold of peritoneum that encases the stomach, large intestine, and other organs in the abdomen. An omentectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the omentum that may be recommended in the practice of gynecology in certain cases such as ovarian cancer if cancerous cells have already spread to the omentum or as a preventive measure to decrease the risk of malignant spread from the ovaries to other abdominal organs.

The two main types of omentectomy are:

1) A total or supracolic omentectomy, in which the surgeon removes the entire omentum

2) A partial or infracolic omentectomy, in which the surgeon removes a portion of the omentum.

In this video, watch Dr. Hasabe perform an infracolic omentectomy in just a few minutes.
