Case description

Surgery remains the mainstay of curative treatment for colorectal cancer. The technical feasibility of laparoscopic surgery for colonic malignancy was first reported in the early 1990s Laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer is challenging because of the multiple steps required for oncological radicality. Numerous trials to date have confirmed the significant short-term benefits of laparoscopic colon cancer surgery over open surgery Sustained long-term survival and recurrence data, which shows that laparoscopic colectomy is not oncologically inferior to open surgery for colon cancer.  We describe here a laparoscopic total colectomy for cancer performed in 2013 in a 57 yo patient with ileo-rectal anastomosis. 84 lymph nodes were removed. The patient is free of disease at 48 months follow up.
