Particularly useful in staining carbohydrates.

It can be used to identify the yeast-like fungus
Pneumocystis jiroveci which causes a form of pneumonia
called Pneumocystis Pneumonia (PCP) or Pneumocystosis.

The cell walls of these organisms are outlined by the brown
to black stain.
