Dear Friends and Colleagues,

We arrived at the XX Conference of the European Society of Surgery (ESS), the “Jubilee Conference”. I am grateful to the ESS Board for giving me the opportunity to organize the 2016 annual conference for this important anniversary. This important moment for our Society is emphasized and appreciated by Mr. President of the Italian Republic who has granted his high patronage.

Therefore, on behalf of the ESS it is my pleasure to invite you to the XX ESS Conference to be held at the Royal Continental Hotel in Naples, Italy, from June 9th-11st, 2016.

I have chosen to use the title “Twenty Years of Integration, Changes and Success in Europe and Beyond” to describe the aim of the conference, because in the last 20 years we have undertaken many great challenges and achieved amazing results.

The ESS was founded after the end of the Cold War, with the aim to meet the challenge of uniting and integrating the surgical knowledge of East and West Europe. These 20 years have been a continued success, mostly because the idea of integration accompanied by the idea of standardized training is the winner.

This year, the organizing committee have tried to do his best to make the most successful congress with the most up to date scientific program consisting of the state of art lectures, symposium, plenary sections, round table discussion, oral and electronic communications. Several interesting topics will be provided, such as digestive surgery, endocrine surgery, bariatric surgery, breast surgery, complications in surgery, hernia surgery, gastrointestinal endoscopy, minimally invasive and robotic surgery, new technologies in surgery, nutrition and biopharmaceuticals in surgical patients, surgery in disaster medicine, training in laparoscopic surgery and developing countries, translational research in surgical disease.

This year, along with the Conference, I am planning to organize the "European Meeting of Residents and PhD Students in Surgery," with the hope of transferring the spirit of challenge of our Society to new generations of surgeons.
In addition, we also planned to accommodate the EBSQ (European Board Qualifications of Surgery) Exam.

I therefore strongly enthusiastically invite all of you to join us at the ESS 2016 Conference in Naples, whose enormous artistic, cultural and natural heritage will provide interest, education and inspiration for everyone.
Arrivederci !

Alfonso Barbarisi, MD, FEBS (H)
ESS President
