Case description

Personalized External Aortic Root Support (PEARS) surgery is a novel, patient-specific approach for managing aortic root aneurysms, particularly in conditions such as Marfan syndrome and other connective tissue disorders. Unlike conventional aortic root replacement, PEARS preserves the native aortic valve and anatomy by using a custom-made, computer-modeled mesh sleeve tailored to the patient’s exact aortic dimensions from 3D imaging data. The mesh is placed externally around the aortic root and ascending aorta, reinforcing the vessel wall and preventing further dilatation while maintaining normal hemodynamics and valve function. This minimally invasive, valve-sparing technique avoids the need for lifelong anticoagulation, reduces operative risks, and offers excellent long-term stability, making it an attractive option for young, active patients.
