Case description

This video was on of six Runner-up entries from the 2019 KS National Robotic Surgery Awards presented at the Robotic Surgeons Council of India in November.  It was produced by Dr. Tushar A. Narain, under the mentorship of Dr. Sudhir Rawal at RTGCI&RC, Delhi.

Robot assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) has become the gold standard for patients undergoing a surgical resection for their prostatic malignancy. The trifecta outcome for patients undergoing a radical prostatectomy, which includes an adequate oncological outcome, maintenance of potency and early return of continence, has become the “Holy Grail” which all urologists strive to achieve. Several modifications in the techniques have been brought in so as to achieve this trifecta outcome. Galfano in 2010 reported their initial success in performing a novel Retzius sparing RARP and later reported excellent functional outcomes as compared to the traditional approach which involves dissection in the space of Retzius and dropping down of the bladder. We present a step by step guide to perform a Retzius sparing robot assisted radical prostatectomy and hope this technique is widely accepted and adopted for its excellent outcomes and attainment of the trifecta goals.
