Case description

The following video shows a prophylactic prepubic urethrectomy during radical cystoprostatectomy. In muscle-invasive bladder cancer, the risk of developing a urethral recurrence after cystectomy varies between 4% and 18%, especially when an ileal conduit is performed. The urethra and the upper urinary tract are often involved either synchronously or metachronously. Furthermore, histopathology of prophy-lactic urethrectomy specimens shows a 12.5% incidence of carcinoma in situ or dysplasia. For this reason, urethrectomy is recommended for every patient who is not a candidate for bladder substitution.
