Thrombocytopaenia (low platelets) Overview - platelet physiology, classification, pathophysiology
Case description
Thrombocytopenia which means low platelets is associated with a variety of conditions. Thrombocytopenia is defined as a platelet count below the lower limit of normal (less than 150,000/microL). Platelets are produced in the bone marrow from megakaryocytes. Each megakoryocyte produces 1000-5000 platelets. Platelets play a key role in hemostasis forming a temporary plug. Therefore if you have low platelets you are unable to for a temporary plug and tend to bleed more easily. In order to understand platelet function, we need to revise hemostasis. Hemostasis involves three main phases vasoconstriction, platelets plug formation and coagulation
