Prominent Circumvallate Papillae

Prominent circumvallate papillae can be a source of concern to a patient if they discover what they think is a suspicious swelling at the base of the tongue. This illustration shows how prominent circumvallate papillae can appear as a small raised red ridge on both sides of the base of the tongue. The characteristic apex to the V of the papillae is located posteriorly on the tongue.
