Case description

When the airflow through the nasal cavity ceases as a result of enlarged adenoids, a characteristic secondary change in the mucosa of the anterior nasal cavity may be observed. This change consists of the state of vasoconstriction and purple discolouration of the mucosa of the anterior portion of the inferior turbinates. These changes result in a wider than normal anterior airspace and pale purple small inferior turbinates. Such changes should not be misinterpreted as an allergic rhinitis.
