Case description

In very severe cases of acute otitis media the infection in the middle ear may spread into the tympanic membrane resulting in what is essentially an acute tympanic membrane infection. When this happens the tympanic membrane becomes edematous and serous fluid leaks from the tympanic membrane. Once the infection is resolved this serous fluid will dry into a golden yellow crust. Once the infection is resolved, this crust will be extruded off the tympanic membrane and out of the ear canal by the process of normal epithelial migration. This is a photograph of the lateral surface of a cast which has been extruded from the tympanic membrane.
