Case description

As a result of continued complete obstruction of the Eustachian tube, negative pressure has pulled the tympanic membrane of this left ear medially so severely that the fibrous middle layer of the tympanic membrane has disappeared and the medial or mucosal layer of the tympanic membrane has become adherent to the promontory of the middle ear. In essence, the air cavity of the middle ear has become obliterated. This condition is referred to as atelectasis.
