Case description

Note the purulent discharge issuing from the right middle ear through the lumen of a previously placed green silastic ventilation tube. In this case the otitis media developed by contamination of the middle ear by water through the lumen of the ventilation tube during swimming. The situation has been referred to as "AOMT" Or [acute otitis media with a ventilation tube in place]. The advantage of this situation is that the middle ear infection can be treated by installing appropriate antibiotic/steroid eardrops in the external ear canal where they will pass into the middle ear through the lumen of the ventilation tube. Thus obviating the need for systemic antibiotics.
