Case description

Many sphincters line the esophageogastrointestinal tract.

In addition to obvious local roles, knowledge of the different interactions allows a better understanding of certain functional disorders.

For example, physiologically, rectal distension reduces peristalsis of the esophagus and stomach, closes the pylorus, in a word, slows down emptying of the stomach but also slows down the whole transit. 

This reflex is called the « recto-oesophageal-gastric reflex »  (Surg IShafik A1, El-Sibai. 2000;1(5):373-9. PMID: 11341593 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE].
