Case description

TMJD have been documented to cause debilitating Oro-facial pain. A 70 year old male patient came to our clinic with left sided facial swelling and tenderness that had increased slowly over the past two years after blunt head trauma. The current options for both nonoperative and operative treatment have been and none of the current treatment options offer definitive cure. In this case we illustrate a patient undergoing percutaneous harvesting of BMAC from the anterior iliac crest with fluoroscopically guided injection into the TMJ for treatment of internal derangement of the TMJ with avascular necrosis. This is a novel option for treatment of TMJD as it is a simple, effective and a non-invasive procedure. Since the taping of this video,, the patient has been discharged from hospital, has been pain free and has responded well to this procedure. Similar studies with BMAC in various orthopedic injuries have shown the effectiveness and efficacy of this treatment option. Further studies need be conducted to prove the effectiveness of this procedure and confirm this as a treatment option for patient with TMJD.
