Case description

Background: One of the disadvantages of rectosigmoid procedures is a presence of the small intestine, which limits the quality of the surgical field. The solution is a sponge placement (within the port), which, after expansion, improve the visibility of the abdomen cavity. Intervention: A sponge compressed to s size of 250 mm per 8 mm per 8 mm was inserted to the pig's abdomen cavity through the port. The pig was under general anesthesia, positioned with head directing the floor. Then, a liquid was absorbed by the sponge and the small intestine changed its position. Once body placed horizontally again, the descending degree of small intestine was assessed. Results: After sponge expantion to the 270 mm per 8 mm per 72 mm size, the small intestine could not enter the pelvis, even with a horizontal operating table. After the surgery the sponge was removed from a 4 cm intestine incision, which was created to perform a biopsy. Conclusionis: The sponge is a valuable tool to provide a good visibility during the surgery, avoiding extreme head down patient positioning.
