Case description

Pulmonary stenosis is a congenital defect that occurs due to abnormal development of the fetal heart during the first 8 weeks of pregnancy. Problems with the pulmonary valve make it harder for the leaflets to open and permit normal blood flow from the right ventricle to the lungs. One or more of the leaflets may be defective or too thick, or the leaflets may not separate from each other properly. If this happens, the valve doesn't open correctly, restricting blood flow. People with mild pulmonary stenosis usually don't have symptoms. Those with more significant stenosis often first notice symptoms while exercising. This symptoms may include: heart murmur (caused by turbulent blood flow), shortness of breath, especially during exertion, chest pain, fainting. The treatment of choice is percutaneous balloon valvuloplasty.Video by Maged Al Ali MD.
