Case description

Off-pump coronary artery bypass (OPCAB) is a form of coronary artery bridge graft (CABG). The main difference between those two procedures is the lack of necessity for stopping the heart and for cardiopulmonary bypass pump. This method was developed to avoid the consequences of using the pump, such as postperfusion syndrome. In addition the off-pump surgery being associated with the clinical benefits of a reduced risk of stroke or memory problems.Off-pump surgery can be more technically challengingand requires a different equipment than standard CABG procedure. Specailly designed tools to immobilize the operated part of the heart are used, as presented above. The technique has a steep learning curve, but with adequate training and experience, the quality of the anastomoses has been shown to be similar to on-pump results in surgeons with comparable experience.
