Case description

During the prodromal phase of an acute upper respiratory infection [URI] the mucous membranes lining the nasal cavity are reddened, the nose is often abnormally patent and the mucus is frequently scanned and stringy in appearance. At this stage the patient usually complains of an itching or burning inside the nose. Shortly after, the mucosa becomes engorged and there is an outpouring of clear watery mucus.
