Case description

The erectile tissue within the nasal cavity, which is localized primarily in the inferior turbinates, is usually in a state of partial vasodilatation. The inferior turbinates are primarily responsible for adjusting the humidification of the inspired air and filtering out foreign particles. Note the size of the normal inferior turbinates on this Coronal CT scan. The right middle turbinate is grossly enlarged owing to the presence of an abnormal air cell [a concha bullosa] which compromises the left middle meatus.
