Case description

Sheets of keratin squames are continuously pushed up to the surface of the skin and shed during normal epidermal maintenance. The outermost layer of squames [the stratum corneum] is normally rubbed away by contact with clothing or as a result of personal toilet. Neglected areas of skin may accumulate patches of thick keratin debris, resulting in a pigmented, greasy, raised lesion that at first glance resembles an area of seborrheic keratosis. Unlike seborrheic keratosis, these areas of neglect keratosis are easily removed with a cotton tipped applicator to reveal normal underlying skin.
