Case description

Hematoma of the pinna is usually the result of blunt trauma sustained during activities such as boxing or wrestling. If the trauma tears one of the small vessels that lie between the perichondrium and the underlying auricular cartilage, then blood will collect in the subperichondrial plane thereby elevating the perichondrium from the underlying cartilage. The loose subcutaneous tissue between the skin and the perichondrium on the medial aspect of the auricle usually provides considerable mobility and as a result a hematoma forms less commonly on the medial surface of the auricle unless the auricular cartilage has been fractured.
