Case description

Persistent and untreated chronic otitis externa may result the buildup of subcutaneous fibrous tissue circling the deep canal resulting in a narrowed lumen [stenosis]. If this narrowed lumen remains patent and the normal self cleansing mechanism of the ear canal epithelium continues to work than no symptoms will result. If however the lumen becomes obstructed with cerumen, a conductive hearing loss will result. Also the extreme narrowing of the lumen will make access to the tympanic membrane and middle ear extremely difficult if not impossible. This type of stenosis usually occurs at the junction between the cartilaginous and bony external canal.
