Case description

Keratosis obturans is a condition which is caused by a failure in the normal self cleansing mechanism of the external ear canal. In this condition keratin outer layer of the epidermal lining of the ear canal does not separate and migrate externally, as a consequence the external ear canal becomes filled with a white plug of tightly compressed unseparated keratin squames. Over time enlargement of this plug of keratin may erode and ulcerate the skin of the external canal, as it has in this case. Note the bleeding around the keratin plug.
