Case description

The etiology of this patient's chronic otitis externa is revealed by the observation of cotton fibers in the deep bony canal and over the tympanic membrane. A small resolving hematoma can be seen on the anterior wall of this right ear as well as a small hematoma in the centre of the tympanic membrane. This is a classic example of chronic otitis externa resulting from trauma by the continuing abuse of cotton tipped swabs.
