Case description

This is the classical appearance of chronic otitis externa. The lumen is patent and a purulent exudate can be seen within the canal. In these cases the etiological agent may be quite varied and a swab for culture and sensitivity is advisable. There may also be an element of self abuse [repeated scratching or attempted cleansing of the ear canal by the patient].
