Case description

During embryological development, the thyroid gland originates on the back of the tongue and descends through the tongue to its final resting place on the neck in front of the trachea. In some patients, this tract may persist as a Thyroglossal Duct. In some cases a cyst may develop in this contract which is known as a Thyroglossal Duct Cyst. One way of identifying a thyroglossal duct cyst is to observe its movement upwards during swallowing. This is a Thyroglossal Duct Cyst seen from the anterior position prior to a swallow.
