Case description

Note the mucopurulent discharge issuing from this moderately large central perforation in this left tympanic membrane. This used to be referred to as chronic suppurative otitis media [CSOM]. The advantage of having a perforation in the tympanic membrane is that this type of middle ear infection can be treated by the direct installation of antibiotic/to write containing eardrops. The disadvantage in prior times was that in some cases the eardrops used were ototoxic and caused destruction of the inner ear.
