Myringotomy
Case description
Note the incision in this left tympanic membrane in the 7 o'clock position. Such an incision through the tympanic membrane is known as a myringotomy. A myringotomy is usually performed to obtain access to the middle ear for the drainage of fluid either serous or mucoid. Most myringotomy incisions heal within 7 to 10 days and ultimately leave no visible scar behind.
