Case description

There are three main types of otitis media: acute suppurative otitis media [AOM], mucoid otitis media [MOM or otitis media with effusion], and serous otitis media [SOM]. This patient has mucoid otitis media in which the middle ear filled with a thick opalescent yellowish mucoid fluid. The fluid in the middle ear discolours the tympanic membrane a yellowish grey. Because of the opalescence of the mucoid fluid in the middle ear, one cannot see through the tympanic membrane to the medial wall of the middle ear. Mucoid otitis media is usually the result of a subclinical or resolved acute otitis media. In the United Kingdom this condition is often referred to as "glue ear".
