Case description

Calcific tendonitis is a degenerative joint disease characterized by calcific deposit formation accompanied by joint pain. Diagnosis is based on imaging techniques. Surgical calcinate excision is required for those resistant to conservative treatment. Titanium is being widely used as an implant material due to its biocompatibility and resistance to corrosion. Several studies show that titanium may cause type I and IV hypersensitivity in some individuals and lead to delayed diagnosis and implant removal. Patient is a 42-year-old female known to have calcifying tendonitis in right supraspinatus muscle with history of shoulder pain for 6 years. Arthroscopic calcinate excision followed by tendon refixation with a single titanium alloy suture anchor was performed. 2 weeks after surgery localized urticaria developed.
