Case description

Trigeminal neuralgia is a painful disorder that refers to nerve suppling sensation to the face. Patients experience electrical, sharp and stabbing pain, which can be provoked by e.g. touching, talking or chewing and sometimes even an air blow. It is very depressing for them. Neuralgia can be treated with medicaments in many cases, but sometimes not and it is often connected with side effects of medications or diminished response to painkillers. Then it is only one way - surgery. Microvascular decompression, showed in this video, is one of the surgical options. Approach to trigeminal nerve is obtained by a quarter-sized hole in the skull behind the ear. Very often an artery is found to pulsate against the nerve. Nerve and blood vessel need to be separated and between them a teflon cushion is placed.
